More navel-gazing

Alright, I think I’ve got the various blogging pieces playing nice together. wp-hashcash got the boot after having allowed about 40 spam comments in a day. Here’s to hoping that secureimage does a better job. I think gallery2 and its plugin WPG2 are ready. We’ll see how some initial albums go.

  1. If you want a stronger image challenge, choose one that doesn’t have such even character spacing. Segmentation is currently the hardest part of character recognition. This challenge is pretty easy to defeat. The blue lines are easy to remove, the warping is also easy to normalize since it’s the same for the characters as the image background.

Challenges that move some characters closer to others (with superimposition) and mess with individual character rotation work best.

  2. I’m sure you’re right, and that’s interesting stuff, but the only metric I care about is how little energy I can spend to stop the comment spam.  Secureimage was trivial to install and I haven’t gotten a single comment spam since I put it in.   If you have a stronger candidate that’s just as easy to get going, I’m all ears.

  3. I have a stronger pair of candidates: Akismet in conjunction with Spam Karma are, as the kids say, crazy delicious. Nothing has slipped past them yet in my experience — indeed, I don’t think anything spammy has even made it to SK. And I’m inherently averse to challenge images anyway, given that they’re hell on people using screen readers. WHY DO YOU HATE THE BLIND, ZABBO?

  4. Akismet and SK2, away! We’ll see how these go, thanks for the pointer Caton.

I’M SO SORRY ALL YOU LOVELY BLIND PEOPLE.

I find myself wondering if text-to-speech software translates all-caps into yelling.
